How should we deal with criticism?

Many a time’s criticism is interpreted as an attack on our character and ability and hence “hurts our pride”. One way of dealing with criticism could be to differentiate between constructive and destructive criticism.

There is a difference between feedback and criticism. Feedback is a vital element of our personal and professional development. But in order for input to have tangible benefits, two principles must be followed. First, it must be supportive. The fact is, there’s a huge difference between feedback and criticism. Feedback is helpful and constructive; criticism is hurtful and damaging.

It’s very difficult to rationalise in a situation when someone is criticising you.

Sometimes we assume some things as criticism when it is actually is a thought of an individual which is not in sync with our personality or individuality or working or thought processing! As all perceptions are lies so this is clash of one lie with another lie!

Simply put, criticism is just a form of communication that is not in sync with our own perception and belief system! However, it can guide us to evaluate other human beings, ourselves, social complexities and relationships which eventually can translate into self-improvement!

Can we look at the word itself positively to start with? Why do we need to focus on the intent of the person who gives us his point of view? Why can we not focus on our intent, on whether we can learn something from it or would we rather focus on the other person?  And personally nobody can pull you down unless you give them the power to pull you down or for some reason deep down you subconsciously agree with them.

If you look up the meaning of the word “criticism” it has two diametrically opposite meanings – one reprove and the other appreciate. It is up to the individual to understand what it is to be taken as, as a disapproval or as appreciation.

Criticism basically follows from providing a critique on an issue, subject, behaviour, performance etc. By its very meaning it should explore and mention the good as well as the not so good part as part of the critique. I also believe it should offer suggestions for improvement. Any criticism without these elements is unfair and the recipient of the critique needs to understand it in the right spirit.

Criticism and rational criticism is essential in a normal functioning society. It helps us become better individually and provides us with a weapon to guide action for a better world.

Criticism can be better understood if we begin to deal or address the “situation” rather than “person”. We need to realise that the same person may react differently in different situations.
